Wearing lipstick can make you feel bold, smart, sexy and powerful. When you walk into a store, you’ll find every color of rainbow in a lipstick, but they’ll also have harmful chemicals like aluminum, chromium and cadmium, all at a potentially toxic level.
Luckily, it is possible to avoid the ingestion of these elements, making your own lipstick free of toxins. The ingredients may be hard to find, but they can be ordered online!
Basic Red Recipe
You’ll love this one! It is the most basic recipe and you can change it if you want to achieve another type and intensity of red.
1 tsp coconut oil
1 tsp. cocoa butter
1 tsp beeswax tablets
1 drop of essence for the scent
1 drop of red dye (for food)
1/4 tsp. cocoa powder, cinnamon or turmeric for a brownish hue
Melt the wax, cocoa butter and coconut oil in a glass jar over a pot of boiling water (bain-marie). When the mixture has melted completely, remove the jar from the heat and add the ingredients that give the color and essence. Mix it well. Use a dropper to transfer the mixture to a small glass container (it expands slightly when cooled so don’t fill it up completely). Store in a cool, dry place.
Another way to get a natural look and an intense red color is to use beets.
1 tablespoon of marvellous oil
Dried and finely grated beetroot
1 tbsp beeswax
Melt the marvellous oil with the beeswax in a bain-marie or in the microwave. Slowly add the beets until you get the color you want. Stir constantly. Transfer the mixture into a glass container and let it cool.
Natural Lip Balm
For those days when you don’t want to wear any color but still want to moisturize your lips.
1 tsp beeswax
3 tsp. almond or olive oil
1/4 tsp. essence (cinnamon, mint, lavender)
Melt the wax with the oil over a low heat, while stirring. Remove the heat mixture and let it cool for a few minutes. Add the essence and mix well. Transfer the mixture into a clean glass container and allow to cool completely.
